Alben N. Hopkins Sr.

Mr. Hopkins was born in Ripley, Mississippi, Tippah County, on February 14, 1941. He presently resides in Gulfport, Mississippi. He is married to the former Ruth Boyd of Walnut, Mississippi, and they have two children, Ashley Anne and Norris. Ashley is a graduate of St. John's High School, the University of Mississippi, and the University of Mississippi School of Law. Norris is a graduate of St. John's High School, the University of Mississippi, and Mississippi College School of Law. Norris is married to Jodie Gillespie of Hattiesburg, Mississippi.
Mr. Hopkins graduated from Walnut Center High School in 1959. He was a four-year varsity letterman in basketball and baseball. He was president of his class as a freshman, junior, and senior; Mr. Walnut High School; and on the Honor Roll. He was chosen as an FFA Star Farmer and attained the rank of Eagle Scout with Silver Palm.
Mr. Hopkins graduated from Delta State College in 1963 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History and English. At Delta State he was a three-year varsity letterman in basketball, member of the "M" Club, Debate Team, and Inter-Fraternity Council. He served as president of his social fraternity, Delta Alpha Omega and is a member of Kappa Alpha Order (chosen to the National Council of Honor). He is a member of Omicron Delta Kappa, Pi Gamma Mu and Pi Kappa Delta Honor Societies. Mr. Hopkins served as president of the Campus Senate, vice-president (1961-62) and president (1962-63) of the Student Government Association. He also served as Executive Councilman (1961-1962) and President (1962-1963) of the Mississippi Inter-Collegiate Council. He was chosen Mr. Delta State College and listed in Who's Who in American Universities and Colleges. Mr. Hopkins graduated in 1965 from the University of Mississippi School of Law with the Degree of Juris Doctor. At the University of Mississippi School of Law, he served as President of Law II, Chairman of the Legal Research Exchange, Vice-President of Phi Alpha Delta Legal Fraternity, Chairman of Law School Honor Council, and President of his graduating class.
He has earned additional credits for work at the University of Mississippi, Blue Mountain College, and William Carey College. In 1985, he received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from William Carey College in Biblical Studies and has completed additional studies at Oxford University and Jerusalem, Israel.
In 1965, he began his legal practice in Jackson, Mississippi, with the law firm of Daniel, Coker and Horton. In 1970, his practice was moved to Gulfport, Mississippi, where he has resided to present. On July 11, 1977, Mr. Hopkins began his own firm which now comprises five lawyers, fourteen employees, and operates under the name of HOPKINS, BARVIÉ & HOPKINS, P.L.L.C.
In 1967, Mr. Hopkins served as President of the Delta State University Greater Jackson Area Association. He was a participant in the "Program for Excellence" at Delta State University. Mr. Hopkins served as President of Delta State Alumni Association for the State of Mississippi (1968-1969), and on the Board of Directors of Delta State University Foundation (1968-1988 and 1991-1995). He served as President of the Foundation in 1995. In 1991, he was selected as Alumnus of the Year at Delta State University for his leadership, achievement and devotion to his chosen field of endeavor, and to Delta State University.
In 1970, he was chosen to appear in "Outstanding Young Men of America" and listed in "Who's Who in the South and Southwest".
In 1971, he was elected to the Executive Counsel of Inter-Alumni Council for
Institute of Higher Learning for the State of Mississippi and served as
Vice-Chairman (1971-1972) and Chairman (1972-1973).
In 1990, Kappa Alpha Order, Delta Beta Chapter, dedicated "Old South 1990" to Mr. Hopkins.
In 1995, he was chosen King D'Iberville, King of All Mardi Gras on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi, Gulf Coast Carnival Association. He serves on the Board of Directors for the Gulf Coast Carnival Association.
He is a 32nd Degree Mason and a member of the York Rite, and Shrine. Mr. Hopkins is a member of the Retired Officers Association; Reserve Officers Association; Gulf Coast Chamber of Commerce; The American Legion; Gulfport Yacht Club; Windance Country Club, and Gulfport Rotary Club.
JUDGESHIP:
General Hopkins is serving a second six (6) year term as Chief Judge of the Court of Military Appeals for the Mississippi Military Department, State of Mississippi. His first term was October 6, 1996, through October 6, 2002, with reappointment on April 7, 2004, for another six (6) year term.
BUSINESS:
He is the President of ANH Enterprises, Inc., and Muddy River Farms, LLC. ANH Enterprises is a farming, ranching and land development company doing business in North and South Mississippi.
He also serves as a Director of First Bank and Trust of Mississippi, with offices in Winona and Biloxi, Mississippi.
HOBBIES:
Mr. Hopkins is an avid outdoorsman enjoying hunting, fishing and boating. He was the 1996 Bluewater King Fisherman of the Mississippi Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo and winner of the Billy Meadows Memorial Trophy of the Mississippi Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo. He is also a certified scuba diver. Mr. Hopkins also includes beekeeping as part of his forestry, farming and ranching business.
